Application

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to produce detailed engineering drawings for hydraulic and pneumatic fluid power systems to Australian Standard (AS) 1100.101 Technical drawing - General principles. Critical dimensions and specifications are predetermined, and drawings or models are developed with or without the use of computer-aided design (CAD) systems.

This unit is suitable for individuals undertaking drafting in manufacturing and other industries that use fluid power equipment and applies to preparing drawings of whole or part of the fluid power system.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Fluid power system diagrams include one or more of the following:

  • basic drive circuits

  • engineer
  • supervisor.

Support services include one or more of the following:

  • estimating department and personnel

  • factory manager or staff.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:

  • following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
  • determining purpose and scope for drawing requirements relevant to the project utilising all available information
  • determining hydraulic and pneumatic system components and circuit diagrams for inclusion in the drawing
  • producing schematic drawings of hydraulic power systems on at least two occasions according to industry standard and client requirements including use of accurate symbols and notations
  • producing schematic drawings of pneumatic power systems on at least two occasions according to industry standard and client requirements including use of accurate symbols and notations
  • complying with organisational policies and procedures, including quality requirements
  • confirming drawing accurately reflects specifications with appropriate personnel
  • consulting with appropriate support services and presenting and explaining drawing
  • storing schematic drawings in accordance with SOPs.

Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • safe work practices and procedures
  • sources of information
  • different approaches to drawing schematics
  • awareness of copyright and intellectual property issues and legislation in relation to drawing
  • quality assurance procedures
  • order of drawing process
  • organisational checking procedures for drawings
  • hydraulic and pneumatic components
  • fluid power system diagrams
  • operating principles of pneumatic systems and components
  • operating principles of hydraulic systems and components.

Assessment Conditions

  • Assessors must:
  • have vocational competency in producing schematic drawings for hydraulic and pneumatic fluid power systems at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
  • satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
  • Where possible, assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions that cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
  • Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
  • Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
